My Story
London to Paris Cycle Ride
Our Story
We are a husband and wife team, both now retired, and 2026 is a significant year for us. When an email arrived from Arthur Rank about this challenge, we thought this would be a great way to celebrate, to remember loved ones and to raise funds for this fantatsic local charity by doing something we both enjoy!
Debbie's story
In October 2014 my mother passed away in a hospice in London. She had spent many months seriously ill in a large London hospital, being looked after by staff who were caring but under immense pressure. The hospice care felt much more relaxed and directly focussed on my mum's needs. Her friends and family were able to visit her in a caring environment. My sisters and I stayed with her throughout her last few days and nights, and she passed away feeling loved.
After I retired in 2023, I wanted to give something back. Working as a volunteer for Arthur Rank was a way to remember my mum and my friends who had received hospice care. As well as in-patient hospice care and care at home, Arthur Rank also provides Living Well Services for those patients living with life-limiting conditions. Care and support also extends to patients' families and friends to help them through challenging times in their lives. These services are available free of charge to people living in Cambridgeshire.
As part of my voluteering, I see first hand the difference the hospice makes to people, whether they are in-patients, friends and family, or visiting the Bistro for a freshly cooked meal. It is a joyful and celebratory place to be, and I want to help this vital resource to continue.
Seamus's story
I first visited the hospice in 2019 when our next door neighbour was receiving end of life care. I was immediately struck by the calm and supportive atmosphere, and the dedication of the staff. In 2022, a dear friend of ours received hospice care at home from Arthur Rank in his final days.
I lost my brother in early 2025 after a long illness - I will be cycling in remembrance of him and in apprecation of the care staff that looked after him.
Arthur Rank delivers hospice and palliative care free to residents of Cambridgeshire. I am fundraising by cycling with Debbie from London to Paris to help support the continuation of these vital services.
